Eating Disorders
The Banksia Practice is based in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
We provide evidence based outpatient treatment for eating disorders. We work with clients aged from 10 years of age through adulthood and their families. We provide assessment and intervention tailored specifically to the needs of the individual or family.
The Banksia Practice is a weight inclusive, anti racist and queer positive space. We respect the individual as the expert in their care and recovery. We are deeply commited to social justice principles which underpin all of our work.
Amy (she/her) is a highly experienced Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) who has worked as a family therapist for the past 15 years. Amy completed a Bachelor of Social Work at Western Sydney University in 2004 and a Master of Counselling - Social Work at the University of New South Wales in 2010. Amy is an Eating Disorder Credentialed clinician with national peak body ANZAED and a full member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and EMDR Association Australia (EMDRAA). She is also a registered Victims Services Scheme provider in NSW.
For the last decade Amy was employed as a Senior Social Worker with the Eating Disorders Service at The Children's Hospital Westmead. During that time she has worked with many families to assist them in bringing about their child's recovery from an eating disorder. In addition to family therapy Amy is a skilled clinician, working with individuals to address their eating disorder and related issues such as complex trauma, anxiety and depression.
In August 2019 Amy opened The Banksia Practice with the aim of providing high quality, focused therapeutic intervention for eating disorders to the Blue Mountains community.
Amy is a passionate advocate for her clients and consistently demonstrates her commitment to providing evidence based interventions whilst ensuring that treatment is centred around the unique needs of both the individual and their family.
The Banksia Practice offer a range of evidence based therapeutic interventions. We strive to meet the unique needs of each individual client and family, this means deciding on the best approach in collaboration with our clients. Our clinicians are Eating Disorder Credentialed by the peak body ANZAED and are trained in all areas of current evidence-based care.
In keeping with the practice principles and values we also ensure a high level of education and understanding of marginalised populations who are affected by eating disorders for example, queer and gender diverse communities and neurodivergent people. We also prioritise attending education and training facilitated by lived experience providers.
The Banksia Practice operates on a fee for service basis. Amy is a registered Medicare provider for the Better Outcomes for Mental Health program which means that a rebate is available for some diagnosed conditions. Access to this program is by a Mental Health Care Plan or Eating Disorders Management Plan. I acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which I live and work, the Darug and Gundungurra people. I pay my respects to their elders, past andpresent. I acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded and that the land remains stolen and occupied.
In recognition of this 2% of practice income is donated to Wagana Aboriginal Dancers based here in the Blue Mountains.
At The Banksia Practice we are dedicated and proud allies of LGBTQIA+ individuals, families and communities. We strive to provide a safe space where all expressions of gender and identity are welcomed.
Practice clinicians acknowledge that eating disorders and related mental health challenges have their roots in structural, systemic, social and cultural elements as well as in the unique, lived experience of the individual client. As such, we are committed to providing care that centres self-determination and that acknowledges and challenges broader social and political structures which influence eating disorders and body image concerns.
We also recognise that LGBTQIA+ clients come to the service with unique needs, including an increased vulnerability to experiencing an eating disorder or body image concerns and related difficulties. We are dedicated to providing responsive care that centres the client’s unique needs, goals and lived experience.
What does that actually look like in the room?
In practice, this looks like a number of different things. Our aim is for this commitment to permeate through all aspects of the service. For example, all of our staff indicate their pronouns on documentation. Our contact and intake forms will also ask for your pronouns to ensure that they are used when we speak with you or when we are providing written or verbal correspondence to other members of your treating team.
We approach the therapeutic work as a collaborative effort, incorporating all the elements of who you are as well as the challenging eating disorder or mental health symptoms you are experiencing. This looks different for each client but a good example would be to ensure we are using gender affirming interventions for a client experiencing gender dysphoria.
We are also committed to undertaking appropriate training and education, to ensure a high level of clinical competency in working with LGBTQIA+ people. This also means maintaining our knowledge by reading from a range of sources particularly those providing relevant research, commentary and information in the eating disorders and mental health fields.
Finally, part of our commitment to being a safe and inclusive service is hearing your feedback. We especially encourage clients to express their concerns or highlight gaps in the services. This can be done in session with your therapist or via our website contact page.
